The Mother Hen and the Fox

Every night, a fox snuck into the chicken coop and stole a few eggs to eat for himself. The chickens were too afraid to stop him, so this went on for a very long time.

Then a mother hen decided one morning that she had had enough. She said to the other chickens, "I will stand for this no longer! This fox is a thief. He is taking our eggs! We must do something about it!"

One of the other hens said, "Hush! We may lay the eggs, but they belong to the farmer anyway. If we speak up or try to stop the fox, he will surely eat us instead."

All the other chickens agreed, because of their fear of the fox. This mother hen, though, did not listen. She wouldn’t stop talking about doing something to stop the fox.

"You are a fool," said some of the chickens. Others chased her out of the chicken coop so they didn't have to listen to her anymore.

That night, the mother hen knew she had to do something. When the fox arrived to steal the eggs, she ran after him in a loud scurry. She clucked as loud as she could and waved her wings to chase the fox away.

She expected the other chickens to follow her and be loud, too, but they stayed quiet in their fear. The mother hen was on her own.

The fox laughed and dropped the eggs to the ground. He showed his sharp teeth and made ready to pounce on the mother hen.

"You fool," said the fox. "Now I will eat you!"

But before he could attack her, the farmer arrived. He had heard the loud noises of the mother hen and come to investigate. He saw the fox and chased him away.

He saw the brave mother hen and said, "Thank you! If it weren’t for you, I never would have known this fox was here. Next time he comes back, I'll be here to catch him. No one is going to steal our eggs."

The mother hen felt very proud of what she had done. The farmer took a liking to her and let her roam free in the yard by the house to play with his kids, while the other hens stayed in the coop, laying their eggs.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Something to Think About

With God to help us, wonderful things are possible. Jesus said, 'Go and preach the good news to everyone'. How could you preach the good news? Perhaps you could share with people instead of keeping things for yourself. Maybe you could laugh and smile, rather than complaining.

The Story

In today’s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to spread the message that anyone who believes in him will be able to do wonderful things. Jesus was taken back up to heaven and sat at the right side of God. The disciples preached everywhere and Jesus was with them. Through the power of Jesus, the disciples were able to work miracles.
